FIDA, NBA Train Young Legal Practitioners On Ethics, Discipline In Kano
The Kano State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), has trained 100 young lawyers on professional ethics and discipline.
According to the FIDA state chairperson, Bilkisu Ibrahim Suleiman, the training, which was held at the NBA state secretariat, was aimed at developing the capacity of the young legal practitioners in areas they are having problems.
She said the upcoming lawyers would not only need to practice but to mingle and learn from experienced and senior members in the profession so they can improve in handling legal proceedings.
Speaking, Chief Magistrate Umma Sani Kurawa, who deliver a keynote presentation on filing processes for civil and criminal proceedings, advised FIDA to be revisiting cases at correctional facilities for review of convicted cases tried outside the jurisdiction.
“I was opportune to visit the prison when I was a Senior Magistrate and my jurisdiction was to impose a fine of N15,000. To my surprise, I met a woman who was convicted and a fine of N50,000 was imposed on her by a magistrate of grade II.

Visit to Hanifa Abubakar
The Chairperson, FIDA Nigeria Kano State Chapter, Barr. Bilkisu Ibrahim Suleiman on Friday led a delegation of Excos to pay a condolence visit to the family of a 5-year-old slain victim, Hanifa Abubakar at Dakata Quarters, Nasarawa LGA, Kano State. The family was assured of FIDA’s support in the pursuit of justice
The Kano State Branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers has achieved a lot towards realizing the aims and objectives of the Association which is primarily centered on promoting and protecting the rights of women and children through pro bono legal services, counseling and other programmes and activities such as conducting prison visits on monthly basis to deliver donations and take brief of indigent female inmates, sensitization and awareness campaign on rape, domestic violence, Gender Based Violence (GBV), etc.
FIDA Kano is a member of Kano State Justice Sector Reform Team (JSRT) and works in collaboration with other stakeholders in the State in it’s effort to achieve the desired objectives. In its effort to promote girls child education, FIDA Kano organizes outreach campaigns occasionally to Girls Secondary Schools within and outside metropolis to sensitize them on the dangers of the social media and other vices in the society especially unwanted and teenage pregnancy.
Again, apart from the prison cases, FIDA Kano also receives cases (relating to women and children) mostly on custody, maintenance, rape and the likes. One of its classical cases was the case of Wasila, a young girl of 12 years old who was married off to a man she doesn’t like and she poisoned him to death. The case was very much publicized which drew the attention of the Government, and with FIDA Kano’s intervention, she was discharged under nolle prose qui on grounds that it was a child marriage. After discharging the victim, Fida Kano made sure she had a better life out of her environment, And many more cases, some of which are still pending in court.
FIDA Kano in conjunction with Isa Wali empowerment marked the 16 days of activism 2019 by visiting four remote villages each in the local governments of Rano, Warawa, Dawakin tofa, and Bichi. They were educated on Persons with Disability Law, Human Rights, Children and Young Person’s Law and also Rape (preventive measures and steps to take after occurrence). More than ten thousand hijabs and caps were distributed and also more than twenty thousand flyers and stickers.
