FIDA Imo Hospital Intervention for Stranded Patients and Scholarship for Indigent Children

International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, Nigeria, Imo State branch, in collaboration with the Okwara Medical Foundation, USA has facilitated the discharge of three indigent children from a hospital in Owerri after offsetting their accumulated bills worth N1.3million on the 9^th of July 2022.

It was gathered that two of the patients underwent major brain (Craniotomy) and stomach (Lapractomy) surgeries, but were detained by the hospital’s management for five and three months respectively, following their inability to pay the bills.

The beneficiaries were also placed on an education funding scheme in partnership with Dr Benedict Okwara, a United States-based medical practitioner and an internal medicine specialist.

Speaking to newsmen, The chairperson of the FIDA Imo, Mrs. Ndidi Anike said the gesture was part of the association’s mandate to cater for the welfare of women and children especially the downtrodden in the society.

The beneficiaries, their relatives as well as the staff of the hospital appreciated Imo FIDA for the gesture and urged other concerned bodies, groups and individuals to emulate their humanitarian effort for a better society.

International women’s day

FIDA lmo branch celebrated international women’s day on March 8th 2022 in conjunction with the medical women’s Association of Nigeria at Relief market Owerri. Market women were sensitized on their rights and the need to reject the 5 Bills bothering on Women’s rights by the National Assembly.

International day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

As part of activities marking the international day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, FIDA Imo branch on the 6th of February 2022, went on an advocacy visit to Umuokanne Ukwu Ancient kingdom,Ohaji/ Egbema, led by the Chairperson Ndidi Anike and her Executives. The United Nations has described Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as compromising procedures that involve altering or injuring the female genitalia for non-medical reasons and is recognized internationally as a violation of girl’s rights the health and integrity of girls and women. Girls who undergo female genital mutilation face short term complications such as severe pain, shock, excess bleeding, infection, difficulty in passing urine, and long-term consequences for their sexual reproductive health and mental health.

However, in lmo State, The Violence against Person’s Prohibition (VAPP)Law has been domesticated and Female Genital Mutilation has also become a criminal offence in the state. FIDA Imo branch will continue to raise awareness on this issue until it comes to a halt.

STAND OUT ACTIVITIES SINCE INCEPTION:

FIDA Imo from the time of its inauguration has embarked upon numerous activities. As the saying “nemo dat quod non habet” goes, we as female lawyers, decided to give what we have in line with the objectives of FIDA International and that is, free legal services to indigent women. Through this, many widows and victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse benefitted. FIDA Imo have also assisted widows to recover seized property of their deceased husband from in laws and as well women in troubled marriages were supported to mend their relationships or get out of abusive situations.

Other activities include, free legal clinic which is rotated amongst members, public medical outreach, visitation to prisons, observation of standout international activities such as International Women’s Day, International day of African Child as well as observation of Imo FIDA Week.

FIDA Imo State has continuously grown from strength to strength. By the grace of God, FIDA Imo through member’s effort and that of some philanthropists in the society is currently building their office complex at MCC Road, Owerri which is nearing completion.

On the 25th of September 2019, FIDA Imo State branch Secretariat building was commissioned by His Excellency the Governor of Imo State RT. HON. EMEKA IHEDIOHA .

FIDA Imo Commemorates the International Day of the Girl Child on the 11th of October2019 FIDA Imo today joined in the commemoration of this year’s international day of the girl child with an advocacy visit to Alvana Secondary School, Owerri.
