MacArthur Project

ENABLING CAPACITY FOR THE ADOPTION AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ADMINISTRATION OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE ACT (ACJA), 2015 IN ALL STATES OF THE NIGERIAN FEDERATION” PROJECT.

Project Overview

FIDA Nigeria is being supported by MacArthur Foundation to implement the “On-Nigeria Project” to promote an atmosphere of accountability, transparency and good governance in Nigeria by reducing retail corruption and strengthening Nigerian-led anti-corruption efforts. This is a three-year project to be completed in the year 2020.

The project supports the adoption and implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) in Nigeria. It will strengthen the Criminal Justice System at all levels below the federal level and as a matter of fact, the project will also explore how the election cycle and process can be utilised to increase social accountability.

Expected Outcomes

FIDA Nigeria Country Vice President/National President, Ms Inime Aguma, has institutionalized the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) for her members to ensure that throughout their career, they keep abreast with law and jurisprudence, maintain the ethics of the profession and enhance the standards of the practice of law. On this project, a CLE workshop on the application of the innovative provisions of the ACJA will be conducted for all FIDA members in the 33 states of Nigeria.

The project activities were carefully designed to achieve well-informed members of the Bar, Bench, Police Force and citizenry on the provisions of the ACJA through capacity building workshops; and an effective Criminal Justice System with expeditious dispensation of justice available to all persons particularly indigent women.

FIDA Nigeria believes that the effective implementation of the ACJA will encourage full implementation of other laws with criminal content such as the Whistle Blower Policy, the Procurement Act, 2015 and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Act, 2015. Technical assistance will be provided to States Houses of Assmbly that request such assistance for the adoption of the ACJA.

FIDA Nigeria with her seasoned crop of lawyers will provide free legal representation and assistance particularly to indigent women on criminal matters thereby testing the ACJA/L in States where it is applicable.
