FIDA Delta visits CJThe International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Delta State, led by her Chairperson Her Honour O.L Omezi (Mrs.), on Thursday 29th March, 2018 paid a visit to the Honourable Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Marshall Umukoro. FIDA Delta called on the Hon. C.J to champion gender sensitive and juvenile friendly Reforms in the administration of justice in the State.

Speaking on behalf of the organization, the Chairperson O.L. Omezi (Mrs) thanked the Chief Judge for his warm reception and eagerness to tackle the challenges of the times. She cited areas for the Chief Judge’s kind attention to include the following:

·        -No child should be in prison irrespective of the circumstances of his/her birth. She drew the attention of the C.J to the fact that a child of less than 2yrs old was found living behind prison walls at the Agbor Prisons, following a visit by members of FIDA to mark the International Women's Day.

·        -The increased rate of violence and sexual abuse of minors in the state.

·        - Accused persons (especially women) with mental health challenges and their competency to stand trial.

·         -Family courts should be manned by specially trained and qualified judges.

·         -Transfer of more cases (where appropriate) for Alternative Dispute Resolution affording individuals (especially indigent women and young persons) better access to justice. Taking into consideration, the fact that ADR is less intrusive.

Finally, the Chairperson Solicited the Hon. C.J's participation and support in the upcoming FIDA Delta Week.

In reply, the Honourable  Chief judge commended FIDA Delta for the tremendous impact made so far and assured the organization of positive  steps taken in the appointment of members of Area Customary Court  as assessors in the family Courts. He bemoaned the dysfunction in society which reflected negatively in the age demographics within the prison population as inmates are  between 17-26 years of age. He charged women to be more accountable in building homes, and parents to be more diligent in paying adequate attention to their children/wards. He stated further that parents should conduct background checks on friends who hang out with their children.
