Several dignitaries were in attendance during the opening ceremony including but not limited to:

-         The Wife of the Governor, Rivers State, Hon. Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, Special Guest of Honor;

-         The Head of Service, Rivers State Civil Service, Mr Rufus N. Godwins JP Chairman opening Ceremony;

-          The Deputy Governor, Rivers State, Dr. (Mrs) Ipalibo Harry- Banigo who was the keynote speaker;

-          The Honorable Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Rivers State, Sir. E. C. Aguma SAN;

-          The Honorable Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs Ukel Oyaghiri;

-          The Honorable Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Hon. Isaac Kamadu;

-          Judges of the High Courts of States;

-          Country Director, IPAS, Ms Hauwa Shekarau

The opening ceremony was kick started with a welcome address by FIDA Nigeria Country Vice President/National President, Inime Aguma (Mrs.) who welcomed all the dignitaries and FIDA Nigeria delegates from the various states across the country. The Continuing Legal Education (CLE) which is an initiative of the National President have already commenced in July and FIDA Nigeria is currently embarking on a national wide CLE training for her members on the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act/Law (2015) with support from the MacArthur Foundation. A brief highlight on the outlined activities for the Pre-convention meeting was given in preparation for the forthcoming FIDA International triennial convention holding in Bahamas was given and she expressed hope that it would establish linkages with FIDA Nigeria 5 year strategic plan.

Opening address by Mr. Rufus N. Godwins

The opening address was given by the Head of Service, Rivers State Civil Service, Mr. Rufus N. Godwins, JP who expressed his excitement with the carefully selected theme of the AGM to address the prevailing economic realities in the country. He noted that women empowerment is pertinent to economic growth and urged FIDA Nigeria members to continue in their struggle in the advancement of the rights and welfare of women and children in Nigeria.

The keynote address

The keynote address was given by the deputy governor of Rivers state, Dr. (Mrs.) Ipalibo Harry-Banigo who also acknowledged the well chosen theme and elucidated that the Nigeria Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (EGRP) 2017-2020 has been developed for the purpose of restoring economic growth while leveraging on the ingenuity and resilience of the Nigerian people- the nation’s most priceless assets. She reiterated that investing in women and girls have a multiplier effect on productivity, efficiency and sustained economic growth. The Deputy Governor stated that the conditions of work must ensure that women are able to maximize their productivity and have access to benefits such as maternity leave, sick pay and other forms of social protection. She advised that women at the grass root level should be engaged so that they would be involved in peace building and conflict resolution, and importantly, improving women’s health strengthens their ability towards economic empowerment.

The Inaugural Speech was delivered by the Special Guest of Honour, the wife of the governor of Rivers state, Hon. Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike. While expressing her sadness that the child rights law is yet to be adopted in some states in Nigeria, she stated that FIDA Nigeria have demonstrated its capacity as a strong advocate for indigent people and enjoined the association to advocate for the establishment of viable and working family courts across the country.

The opening ceremory was concluded witha vote of thanks by FIDA Nigeria National Secretary, Rhoda Tyoden-Moore who thanked all the dignitaries for their presentations and the time allotted to attend the ceremony.

The Opening Ceremony of the FIDA Week/ Annual General Meeting & Pre-convention Meeting came to a close with a welcome cocktail.               

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The AGM commenced on the Day 2 with the meeting of FIDA Nigeria standing committees to discuss the reports of the various committees that oversees FIDA Nigeria activities across the country. An update on the 2017 projects implemented by FIDA Nigeria was presented by the Deputy Country Vice President/Deputy National President, Fatima Okugade (Mrs.) with emphasis on the MacArthur Foundation supported project on the education and implementation of the Administration of the Criminal Justice Act (2015) expected to increase the possibility of effective utilisation and probability of strengthening the Criminal Justice System at all levels below the federal level.

This was followed by the pre-convention meeting in preparation for the forthcoming FIDA International triennial convention scheduled to hold in the Island of Bahamas from the 13th-17th November, 2017. FIDA members deliberated on innovative steps that would ensure a fruitful convention that would also inform FIDA Nigeria’s 5 year strategic plan.

The day was capped with a colourful cultural night event where FIDA Nigeria state branches showcased the cultures of their various states through their traditional attires and cultural dance.

Continuing Legal Education (CLE)

FIDA Nigeria Country Vice Presiden/National President has taken steps to institutionalize the CLE which is a mandatory training for every lawyer called to practice in Nigeria. Day 3 of the AGM was exclusively reserved for the CLE sessions. Below are the summary of the topics treated at the CLE and the presenters:

Understanding the Nigeria Economic Recover and Growth Plan by Mr. Kayode Obasa (Director, Economic Growth, Federal Ministry of Budget and National Planning)

 

·         Parallel sessions

(a)  Economic Empowerment of the Nigerian Woman: From the Village to the Boardroom by Dr. Mrs. Seinye Lulu-Briggs and Chief (Mrs.) Funmi Awomolo, SAN.

(b)  The Right to Health as a key to Economic Empowerment of Women and Girls (Primary Health Care; Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights) by Ms. Hauwa Shekarau (Country Director, IPAS) and Dr. Mrs. Rosemary Ogu (Immediate Past President of Midwives Association of Nigeria).

(c)  Participation of Women in Politics as a tool for their Economic Empowerment by  Aubrey McCutcheon (Chief of Party, National Democratic Institute), Hon. Betty Apiafi (Member, House of Representatives) and Mr. Osaze Uzzi (Diector, Voter Education, Publicity, Gender and Civil Society Organization, INEC).  

(d)  The Role of Women in fighting Corruption: A Critical Analysis of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 by Hon. Justice Elsie Thompson (Justice of the Rivers State High Court), Dr. Zaccheus Adangor (Law Lecturer, Rivers State University) and Mrs. Florence Fiberesima (Solicitor General of Rivers State & Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Justice).
