CSW61: FIDA Nigeria Hosts Parallel Event, Calls For Improved Women’s Economic Empowerment

The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria), on 15th March, 2017 hosted a parallel event at the ongoing UN CSW61 in New York.
Welcoming guests to the occasion, the Country Vice President/National President of FIDA Nigeria, Inime Aguma enjoined guests to put women’s empowerment issues on the front
burner. She expressed hope that the event would provide platform to strategise on ways forward in women’s empowerment.
Speaking at the event, Wife of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, and High Court Judge, Suzette Nyesom-Wike, outlined strategies stakeholders may consider in improving the lot of women.
In her contribution, Stephenie Foster, former Senior Advisor at the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, US Department of State noted that countries where women are economically empowered do better on the global economic index.
In her remarks, former Majority Leader of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Mulikat Akande-Adeola, encouraged women to be better involved in political participation. She argued that women have all what it takes to lead the world aright.
Immediate past National President of FIDA Nigeria and Country Director, Ipas Nigeria, Hauwa Shekarau in her presentation wondered if a woman without the full enjoyment of reproductive health and rights can be said to be truly empowered.
The event, moderated by Ezinwa Okoroafor, FIDA International Secretary had stakeholders from rights groups, community based organisations and the media including Naija Magazine Online (NMO).
