FIDA NIGERIA HONOURS GOVERNOR WIKE WITH AN AWARD FOR INVESTING IN WOMEN

The International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA Nigeria, on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016 honoured the Rivers State Governor, His Excellency, Chief Nyesom Wike, for his investment in the welfare of women and children, particularly in Rivers State.

During a dinner hosted by the Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Justice Eberechi

Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, a delegation of FIDA Nigeria National Officers (including the FIDA Regional Vice President for Africa, Hajia Laraba Shuaibu) led by the Country Vice President/National President, Mrs Inime I Aguma, presented an award to the Governor in recognition of his role in the promotion of the rights and welfare of women and children. Mrs Aguma thanked the Governor for his continued support to the work of FIDA Nigeria.   

Presenting the award on behalf of FIDA Nigeria, the former FIDA Nigeria President and the Judge of the African Court of Human and Peoples' Rights, Justice Elsie Nwanwuri Thompson, Mrs Aguma urged the Governor to sustain his commitment to the welfare of women and children.

Mrs Aguma noted that the recognition was a unanimous decision by the National Officers of the organization.

Serenading the Governor with a heart-warming rendition, Hajiya Laraba Shuaibu, in her remarks, lauded Governor Wike for standing up for women and children, emphasising that he deserves the award of recognition.

Adding her voice to the recognition, the representative of the Association of Women Judges, Justice Patricia Mahmoud, Wife of the incoming President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), commended the government and people of Rivers State for their kindness, warmth and friendship all through the NBA Annual General Conference, Garden City, 2016.

In his remarks, the incoming NBA National President, Mr Abubakar Mahmoud, expressed satisfaction with the recognition extended to the Governor by FIDA Nigeria, and used the opportunity to laud the Governor for a successful NBA Annual General Conference.

The Deputy Governor, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo, acknowledged Governor Wike's commitment to the interests of women noting that the Governor had from the very beginning of his administration, invested in women and children. She highlighted that the very first actions of the Governor were the appointment of a female Acting Chief Judge and President of the Customary Court of Appeal.

In her response to the award , the Wife of the Governor, Her Excellency, Honourable Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike, thanked FIDA Nigeria for recognising her husband. She appealed to female lawyers and Judges to always empathise with the less privileged when handling matters concerning them.

 

In his acceptance message, Governor Wike assured FIDA Nigeria of his commitment to the advancement, preservation, promotion and protection of the rights and interests of women and children.
