Press Release: Abuja
FIDA NIGERIA CONDEMNS THE KIDNAP OF OKEY WALI (SAN)
The news of the kidnap of the immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Okey Wali (SAN), which sad event occurred on the 12th of October, 2014, was received by the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA Nigeria) with great sadness and distress. FIDA Nigeria condemns this wicked act as it violates Mr. Wali’s constitutional rights as a Nigerian, and all forms of regional and international human rights standards. FIDA Nigeria calls upon the security agencies to rise up to the challenge and ensure that Mr. Wali is rescued soon. This call for action is predicated upon the right of every Nigerian to liberty, freedom of movement, safety and protection, irrespective of his/her status.
FIDA Nigeria notes that human security in Nigeria have been under intense threat in recent times; agrees that the security agencies have been working hard to stem the rise; but insists that their efforts have not produced the needed results as lives and properties continue to waste. We therefore calls on the security agencies to double their efforts in ensuring the protection of lives and property. We also call on the kidnappers to release Mr Wali forthwith.
FIDA Nigeria continues to hold government at all levels responsible for the security and well-being of citizens. FIDA Nigeria cautions that insecurity ruins a nation and places women and children in the most vulnerable state.
