On the occasion of this year’s International Women‘s Day, the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Nigeria agrees with the United Nations that working for women’s rights, empowerment and gender equality means progress for all. It is this same conviction that ignited female lawyers in Nigeria in 1964 to come together under the platform of FIDA to invest in women and girls.
As FIDA Nigeria celebrates its 50 years of promoting, protecting and preserving women and children’s rights, it acknowledges that the terrain has not changed much. There are indeed some incremental changes in the status of women, but they have been quite slow and non-systemic. It is therefore an auspicious time to remind Federal, State and Local Governments, organizations, individual men and women in our country, that Nigeria owes an obligation; internationally, regionally and locally, legally and morally to ensure the female gender’s right to live free of the discrimination that prevents her from participating in the economy and having an equal say in the decisions that affect her life.
We invite you all as you celebrate the International Women’s Day to join FIDA Nigeria as we celebrate 50 years of facilitating women’s contribution to nation building. Golden Jubilee Activities hold in the 32 States of the Federation that host FIDA Nigeria with a Grand Finale in Abuja in August, 2014.
Remember in the words of Ban Ki Moon, The Secretary General of the United Nations “all of us benefit when women and girls – your mothers, sisters, friends and colleagues -- can reach their full potential.”
